Regarded as the ‘English Walt Disney’ by Time magazine (1938), Len Lye was a pioneer of direct-animation and a huge influence on the animators of Disney’s Fantasia (1940). This exhibition shows three of Lyes’ films, alongside the work of three contemporary artists, whose work explore the same themes.

British Silver Week Masters’ Exhibition

An honorary patron of British Silver Week 2009, the Duke of Devonshire will host British Silver Week’s most ambitious exhibition to date at his home, Chatsworth House – ‘Palace of the Peak’. The exhibition unfolds the story of British silversmithing since the 1950s and includes displays from the Pearson Collection and a centerpiece by 12 of the UK’s finest modern silversmiths.

Levity II, Architects of Air, Locke Park

This 800 square metre walk-inside inflatable sculpture is a unique, awe-inspiring arts experience. Visitors become participants inside an inflatable environment – which is out of this world! Architects of Air build and tour the luminarium designs of Alan Parkinson, which have welcomed over 2 million visitors around the world. Provided with maps on entry, visitors can explore the cavernous, labyrinthine tunnels.

From the city that brought the world Pulp, Warp Records and Arctic Monkeys, comes a new five-day summer music festival entitled Sheffield – Music City. The English Mystery Plays

Watch the UK’s only traditional outdoor Mystery Play of the year at Monk Bretton Priory near Barnsley. For two weeks this English Heritage site will be transformed into an outdoor theatre for a production featuring over 200 cast and crew, including Yorkshire-born Patrick Stewart as the Voice of God, Phoenix Night’s Toby Foster as impish narrator Bog Oak and Grace Kelly (sister of Corrie’s Katherine Kelly) as Eve. Family fun, with traditional medieval dancing and music, with a special rare breed pig Hog Roast and onsite bar.

Festival for Life – Exposition of Floral Fantasy

Cawthorne Open Gardens

Residents of the award-winning Cawthorne Village near Barnsley, will be opening their gardens to the public to help raise funds for their Anglo-Saxon Parish Church. Visitors are expected to travel from far and wide to see the garden displays in their prime in late June. With a full tour expected to take two to three hours, visitors are encouraged to bring comfortable shoes and sample homemade refreshments, BBQ food the Buck’s Fizz Pit Stops!
