SPLISH, SPLASH, SPLOSH – SWIMMING WITH A DIFFERENCE IN 2010!
Fancy a swim in some of the world’s coolest waters in 2010? Want to take the plunge into the polar seas for a unique experience unlike any other? Hurtigruten offers the opportunity to do just that in Greenland, Spitsbergen and Antarctica and for 2010 a new option is featured on the Norwegian coast.
Vardø, home to 2,500 Norwegians, lies furthest east of any town in Western Europe and as far north as Siberia. Here, Hurtigruten guests have a new, unique opportunity to be one of the few people to swim in the sea, which is ice-free in winter due to the Gulf Stream. From the changing room on land it is just a few metres to the refreshing Barents Sea and a wonderful dip that is included as part of any voyage visiting the town.
Further south in Antarctica, the volcanic Deception Island forms one of the largest natural harbours in the world. It is also a natural pool in the Antarctic Ocean, with an average temperature of zero degrees Celsius. However, geothermic activity does mean that bathers can occasionally feel comfortable currents of water above freezing. During their visit to Deception Island, MS Fram’s guests will have the option of plunging into icy waters for a refreshing dip.
The expedition ship MS Fram also takes guests to Greenland and Spitsbergen. Take a dip in the sea off Greenland’s coastal town of Uummannaq or in the Magdalenefjord in Spitsbergen.
As far as sea conditions allow, Hurtigruten’s expedition team will ensure that the bravest of passengers are able to satisfy their thirst for adventure in the water. Those who fancy a less challenging dip can enjoy these destinations from the Jacuzzi on deck, whether onboard MS Fram or one of the newer ships plying the Norwegian coast.
Sample Voyage – a seven day Voyage North from Bergen to Kirkenes, stopping at Vardø, costs from £659 cruise only if booked by 31 December or from £ 941pp cruise only if booked after that.
