Become A VisitDenmark ‘Guinea Pig’ And Get A FREE Holiday To Denmark

Posted on 24 Feb 2010 at 7:30am

VisitDenmark has launched its 2010 ‘Be our Guinea Pig’ holiday testing programme. The programmes gives 2 families and 4 couples the chance to go one a holiday to Denmark, where they are asked to test different types of activities, transportation and accommodation and document their trip through a short holiday video. The Guinea pig holiday test programme is designed to appeal to adventurous, free-spirited travellers willing to ‘test’ different Danish holidays and record their experiences in the form of a video clips that will be published on the VisitDenmark website. The holidays range from sophisticated city breaks to family camping holidays in the great outdoors, with each package including accommodation and transport to Denmark by air or ferry, as appropriate but also different activities for each trip is included as this is part of the test they are asked to perform as a Guinea Pig. Those keen to take part can enter the competition via the ‘Be our Guinea Pig’ link on www.visitdenmark.com/guineapig, with the closing date for all applications being noon Friday 26 March.

Viking family holiday
The six holidays being given away are each very different, exemplifying the fantastic variety that a holiday in Denmark has to offer. Each is exquisitely appealing in its own way, but perhaps the quirkiest of all is the Viking-themed holiday based in the historic town of Ribe. One lucky family will get to stay at the Ribe Byferie holiday centre for three nights before moving on to the island Fanø in the same area of South Jutland. Ribe is one of Denmark’s oldest and most charming cities, which this year celebrates its 1,300-year jubilee. Ribe’s excellent Viking Museum and the nearby Viking Centre provides plenty of insight into the life and times of these hardy warriors, while other exciting experiences include a Seal Safari on the Wadden Sea – a vast intertidal area that this year will become Denmark’s third National Park. This self-drive holiday will appeal to adventurous families and includes ferry crossings with DFDS Seaways between Harwich and Esbjerg.

Camping family holiday
Families that prefer a traditional seaside break could instead apply for the camping holiday prize. Denmark has more than 7,300km of coastline whose sandy beaches and clean seas act as a magnet for families, while campsites can offer such high-quality amenities as indoor pools, restaurants, sports facilities and even top-of-the-range spas. The prize includes ferry crossings and campsite fees for seven nights (the winner must provide their own tent, caravan or other equipment), while the opportunity to ‘test’ certain fun, family-orientated activities such as cycling and local attractions will also be available. The camping holiday is scheduled to take place during the school holidays in August, when Denmark’s weather is at its very best.

Touring holiday for a couple
The other four holidays in the giveaway are better suited to those travelling without children. The first of these is a self-drive touring holiday of the beautiful Danish countryside, with accommodation provided along the way in a series of ‘kro’, the uniquely charming and charismatic inns that can be found all over the country. There are nearly 90 of these individually-owned properties scattered across Denmark, each offering traditional hospitality alongside home comforts and gourmet restaurants featuring typical Danish cuisine. This holiday is slated to take place in June, with the trip including ferry crossings, four nights’ B&B accommodation and activities that could include cycle hire and admission to local attractions.

City breaks to Copenhagen and Aalborg
The final three holidays in the test programme are city breaks. The first of these is to Copenhagen during the annual jazz festival in July. This is one of the most exciting times to visit the Danish capital as the city literally buzzes with music, with live performances taking place everywhere from indoor venues to the streets themselves. The second trip to Copenhagen will focus on green and sustainable Copenhagen and how a tourist can experience the green way of living in the city. Participants might be asked to tour around the city on one of the 2000 free city bikes, test the co2 neutral city circle bus and many other green ways of exploring the city.

The third and final urban escape is to Aalborg, Denmark’s third city, in June. Aalborg may be small but it is both charming and fun, with more bars and restaurants per resident than any other city in Denmark. It’s also a hotbed of culture, with fantastic art and architecture, plus it’s the gateway to the beautiful North Jutland coastal region. Both these holidays include flights from London and two nights’ B&B accommodation (plus additional city-specific activities and other benefits).

The director of VisitDenmark says
Commenting on the ‘Guinea Pig’ programme, Henrik Kahn, Director of VisitDenmark said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for enthusiastic and adventurous travellers to experience our wonderfully diverse country whilst documenting their experiences to highlight just how much fun a holiday in Denmark can be. Applicants don’t need to have any experience of writing or photography – just an ability to express themselves in an interesting and original way. All they have to do is choose which holiday they want to apply for, click the appropriate link – and cross their fingers!”

The Guinea Pig holiday test programme is open to all residents of UK, but certain terms and conditions apply. Please see www.visitdenmark.com/guineapig for further details.

Forget their pastries and Hans Christian Anderson, what the Danes are really famous for these days is LEGO and LEGOLAND®; and it’ll be even easier to get to Denmark’s main attraction in 2010 when both Keycamp and Eurocamp will be offering great family holidays to the fabulous Lalandia® resort, which lies right next door.

A great base from which to enjoy the theme park, plus other sights including Koldinghaus Castle and Givskud Zoo, Lalandia is almost a destination in itself, offering all the ingredients for a fun-packed family break. It hosts Scandinavia’s largest waterpark, with slides, lazy river and wave machine; as well as Monky Tonky Land, a huge indoor play area for children, with climbing nets, bouncy castles and slides.

A bowling alley, indoor mini-golf and outdoor play areas, plus a choice of restaurants, bars and cafés are also provided.

Accommodation is a choice of stylish bungalows sleeping up to five or seven, all offering home comforts such as flat screen TVs and fully-equipped kitchens, plus a covered terrace.

Weekend breaks and holidays are available all year round with prices starting from £155 per party per night for a Classic Plus Bungalow sleeping up to four adults and 1 child aged 0 – 2 years. Fly-drive packages to Billund airport, just 5km away, or ferry to Esbjerg or Amsterdam are available at a supplement, as are tickets to LEGOLAND®.
