In the occasionally hectic days during the run-up to Christmas and naturally over the Christmas break, Lufthansa is getting passengers into the festive mood with traditional Christmas food on the in-flight menu, Christmas goodies and seasonal decorations.
An established tradition on board is roast goose with red cabbage and potato dumplings and herb crumble, which will be served on long-haul flights to First and Business-Class passengers. Around 112,000 portions of this festive delicacy will be served on board in November and December. New this year is a culinary Christmas market: First-Class passengers on selected flights from Germany to the US East Coast will savour typical specialities sold in abundance at Christmas fairs, like potato pancakes or fritters with salmon rolls or apple sauce, Nuremberg bratwurst, cucumber potato salad, veal rissoles or Christmas Stollen, a traditional German fruitcake. The drinks, striking a Christmassy note, include an Advent tea. An outstanding highlight on the Christmas menu are the best Christmas cookies chosen from the “Lufthansa baking“ campaign by World Champion Pâtissier Bernd Siefert. The winning entry is a baked apple tiramisu in spiced Spekulatius cookies. A small packet of the best Lufthansa cookies will be presented on board to Business-Class passengers. Passengers in Economy Class will get to enjoy them as well.
On long European routes, the classic roast goose dish will also be served in Business Class. The entrée is a venison pyramid with chanterelles and Walldorf salad. Rounding off the menu is a Printen gingerbread mousse with a dusting of cinnamon and fig sauce. Up to the second day after Christmas, the cabin crew will be handing out around 61,000 truffle chocolates, 370,000 chocolate Santa Clauses, 270,000 snowmen, one million
mini-gingerbreads and 580,000 Christmas pralines to Lufthansa passengers. 850 Advent wreathes will enhance the festive spirit. From mid-December, a special surprise awaits the youngest passengers: On all routes and in all classes, children will be given a small elk to cuddle as a Xmas toy.
A Christmas atmosphere will naturally also set the tone in Lufthansa lounges. Besides festive decorations, passengers in First-Class lounges and the First-Class terminal will have a choice of savoury seasonal food: Crème brulée from pâte de foie gras with pureed cinnamon apple and gingerbread, for example, or Christmas duck with cranberry sauce, caramelized red cabbage and bread dumplings, venison stew with nut spaetzle and baked apple. As a finale to wind up their stay in the lounge before their flight, they can savour almond-fig tartlets as a dessert or cinnamon mousse with honey and rum. On offer to passengers in Business and Senator Lounges during Advent and the Christmas holiday season are butter Stollen fruitcake, gingerbreads and red Christmas apples.

Air Berlin: 5 years of topbonus frequent flyer scheme
- 400 per cent growth over the past two years
- Benefits for business travellers and holidaymakers
- Online anniversary competition
Germany’s second largest airline is celebrating the 5th anniversary of its topbonus frequent flyer scheme. Over the past two years alone the number of members has increased by 400 per cent to 2 million. topbonus was set up in 2004 and aimed particularly at leisure passengers. In early 2007 more business travellers became members. Since the end of 2007 the frequent flyer scheme has had a global approach. In April 2009 the airline revised topbonus completely so that flying with Air Berlin is now even more comfortable and attractive. Christoph Debus, a member of the executive board at Air Berlin PLC commented: “The topbonus frequent flyer scheme is becoming a real success story. Our guests appreciate the benefits available with the re-launch.”
Air Berlin’s topbonus program is free to join and new members can register at airberlin.com/topbonus. Members can collect both award and status miles. Miles can be earned on flights with Air Berlin and NIKI, and are also available with offers from topbonus partners, which include car hire companies and hotels. The award miles collected can be redeemed for free flights worldwide or for upgrades to Business Class. There are also special topbonus bargains, which mean that topbonus members can book award flights from just 3,000 miles. Status customers can designate a favourite service within Europe as “My Route” to collect double award miles. The benefits available with Silver and Gold status are particularly interesting for business travellers, as they offer a faster and relaxed procedure prior to boarding.
On the 5th anniversary of its frequent flyer scheme, the airline will be opening the doors to the great topbonus partymile online. Until 31st January 2010 Air Berlin passengers will have a choice of anniversary offers from topbonus and program partners. The online competition allows players to test their knowledge of geography. There are 10 million topbonus award miles in total as well as other prizes to be won.
Passengers traveling with Japan Airlines (JAL) departing from Terminal 3 at London’s Heathrow Airport, will from December 14, 2009, be able to use the “Galleries First” and “Galleries Club” lounges of oneworld partner airline, British Airways (BA).
Based on the same concept as the exclusive BA lounges in the newly opened Terminal 5, “Galleries First” and “Galleries Club” in Terminal 3 are also conveniently located near the shopping area and departure gates, and offer many amenities such as shower rooms, a well-equipped business center, and the use of wireless internet connection. JAL Global Club members, eligible passengers and eligible traveling companions departing on Japan Airlines that day, can look forward to a relaxing time in the lounges before boarding.
Japan Airlines code shares with British Airways to link Japan, via London Heathrow, to 5 cities in the United Kingdom such as Manchester and Edinburgh, as well as 5 other cities – Hamburg, Lisbon, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zurich, in Europe.
Passengers can expect smoother transfers now that operations of all oneworld alliance members serving London Heathrow, including JAL, have been consolidated to Terminals 3 and 5 – the airport’s latest passenger terminal that is used exclusively by BA. Terminal 3 is the closest in proximity to 5 and will be connected by the latest baggage system, which allows for speedier and more efficient transfers of baggage, providing enhanced convenience for all valued customers of oneworld.
JAL will cease operations of its First Class Lounge and executive class Sakura Lounge at London Heathrow from December 14, 2009, after which passengers can continue to enjoy quality services at the BA lounges. Changes have also been made to airport lounges used in other European destinations, namely Milan, Moscow and Paris, and in Frankfurt where the JAL lounge was renovated to emulate the revamped lounge in Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.
About Japan Airlines The JAL Group, Asia’s largest airline group by operating revenue, connects Japan to over 30 cities in Europe together with its code share partners.
JAL First Class offers fully reclining Skysleeper or Skysleeper Solo seats while JAL Executive Class – Seasons, introduces the concept of “quality time” spent on board and features the award-winning JAL Shell Flat Seat that reclines to almost the horizontal and provides a high degree of personal privacy. From December 2007 JAL started offering JAL Premium Economy, now available on key Europe routes, and from August 2008 started introducing on US routes a luxurious new JAL First Class Suite and the JAL Shell Flat NEO in executive class.
Top quality in-flight service has always been the hallmark of JAL’s reputation. Cuisine offered in all classes is a combination of Western and Japanese food. JAL carries a fine selection of award-winning wines and sake in First Class and JAL Executive Class – Seasons, JAL’s business class. Quality in-flight entertainment systems are a feature of JAL’s international fleet aircraft.
A member of the oneworld global alliance since April 2007, JAL offers customers many benefits, such as the JAL Mileage Bank frequent flier program.
As of today, Finnair uses Terminal 5 at Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport. Also other oneworld airlines flying to Stockholm – British Airways, Iberia and Malev – have moved to the more modern, more spacious terminal. The new terminal offers shorter distances and better services than the old Terminal 2.
After the change, the oneworld companies have a joint ticket office and a number of self-service check-in kiosks in the terminal. Passengers can also check in at check-in desks 33-44.
All departing passengers will receive automatic SMS reminder about terminal change for a couple of weeks around the date of move. Finnair is actively sending important flight and service information to mobile number listed in passenger’s flight reservation details.
“The Baggage Drop desk is open all day and the security control will have more service points. Also, there is a separate, Priority lane for Business Class passengers and Finnair Plus Platinum, Gold and Silver and oneworld top-tier customers on the right side of the desk. The terminal also has more shops and restaurants as well as a wider range of products than the old terminal,” says Markku Remes, Finnair’s Customer Experience Management Manager.
Departing and arriving flights use Terminal 5’s F wing that is located on the right side of the terminal, gates F26-F39. The oneworld airlines’ new bright Executive lounge facility is also located on the right side of the beginning of the same wing.
Using the Arlanda Express train, the journey to the airport takes 20 minutes and passengers can check in, if they wish, using the check-in kiosks at Stockholm Railway Station while waiting for the train.
oneworld member airlines serving Stockholm Arlanda are to transfer their operations to the airport’s newly improved and expanded Terminal 5 from Tuesday 24 November.
Meantime, today the alliance’s biggest airport co-location project to date reached its final phase, with the last moves of the alliance’s member airlines at London Heathrow.
All Qantas’ operations at the airport and British Airways’ Bangkok, Singapore and Sydney services have now switched from Terminal 4 to Terminal 3.
Stockholm Arlanda is served by four of the alliance’s carriers – British Airways, Finnair, Iberia and Malév Hungarian Airlines – with some 20 departures a day.
All four of them move into the new building at the same time.
They are currently housed in Arlanda’s Terminal 2.
Their premium passengers – Business Class customers and all Emerald Sapphire tier cardholders in any oneworld frequent flyer programme – will have access to a bigger and better shared lounge, complete with free wifi access for their laptops.
They will also be able to use a fast track priority lane through security.
The four on-line oneworld carriers will also share a ticket office and self-service check-in kiosks.
British Airways offers six daily flights from the airport to London Heathrow, Finnair nine to Helsinki, Iberia daily to Madrid and Malév twice daily to Budapest – with the smoothest of onwards connections to the other near 700 destinations served by themselves and their oneworld partners worldwide.
The upgraded Stockholm Arlanda Terminal 5 was completed in April this year, offering passengers more modern and spacious facilities, including a larger departures hall, more check-in desks and kiosks, an improved security clearance area and a wider choice of shops and restaurants.
A key benefit is shorter walking distances to and from boarding gates.
It is oneworld’s fourth airport co-location project to be completed this year.
The biggest of them – and oneworld’s largest such project worldwide to date – is at London Heathrow, completed today with the moves of all Qantas’ operations at the airport and British Airways’ Bangkok, Singapore and Sydney services from Terminal 4 to Terminal 3.
The project brings the operations of the alliance’s eight carriers serving the airport from across all five of its passenger terminals to just two, smoothing oneworld transfer at its biggest European hub.
Finnair and Iberia moved to Terminal 3 earlier this year, along with a number of British Airways’ shorthaul routes.
Already based in Terminal 3 were all the other oneworld on-line carriers – American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Royal Jordanian.
All BA’s other operations are now housed in the new Terminal 5.
Terminal 3 is the closest of Heathrow’s existing terminals to Terminal 5.
Terminal 3 is nearing the completion of a multi-million dollar up-grade to bring its customer facilities up to a similar standard to those offered at Terminal 5, including a new British Airways lounge facility, whose First Class suite will open when its Sydney flights move there.
Earlier this year, oneworld member airlines brought their operations together at two of the alliance’s other European hubs – Barcelona and Helsinki.
At the Spanish city, all the alliance’s on-line airlines – Iberia, American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair and Royal Jordanian – are now based in the airport’s new Terminal 1.
At the Finnish capital, Finnair and its on-line oneworld partners – British Airways and Malév Hungarian Airlines – are now all housed in Terminal 2, following the opening of its extension for longhaul and non-Schengen services.
This makes connecting between flights operated by the alliance’s partner airlines more convenient.
